Charities only accept mattresses in clean, like-new condition, no stains, tears, or odors, and many have stopped taking them entirely. Call before you load anything. If yours qualifies, donation is the best outcome and some organizations offer pickup.
Memphis residents can check whether current bulk collection guidelines accept mattresses in their zone, and solid-waste customers can self-haul to the landfill monthly at no charge with an MLGW bill and ID. Suburban residents face different rules; Germantown and Collierville sanitation programs are more restrictive on bulky items, which is why so many mattresses end up leaning in suburban garages.
Buying a new mattress? Many retailers offer old-mattress removal at delivery, sometimes free, sometimes $20 to $50. If you're replacing anyway, ask before delivery day; it's the cheapest pickup you'll find.
